Cataracts
Cataracts are a common problem, especially as people age. The condition causes cloudy areas to form on the lens of each eye. The only way to correct the problem is by undergoing cataract surgery. During this procedure, Dr. Brady Palmer removes the clouded lens from each eye and replaces it with a clear artificial lens called IOL.
How Do Cataracts Develop?
The normal process of aging causes the proteins in the lens of each eye to break down in people with cataracts. While age-related cataracts are the most common, you may receive a diagnosis of traumatic or secondary cataracts. Traumatic cataracts occur after an eye injury and can be more complicated to treat due to the structures surrounding your lenses also requiring repair.
Types of Cataracts
Secondary cataracts refer to cloudy patches that develop on the lens of each eye after cataract surgery. Dr. Palmer may also refer to secondary cataracts as posterior capsular opacification. This issue is common after surgery and is easily treatable.
As for age-related cataracts, the proteins in your eyes can start to break down as early as age 40. However, most people do not begin experiencing symptoms until age 60 or later. Diabetes and other chronic health conditions may cause you to develop cataracts sooner than you would have otherwise.
Symptoms of Cataracts
We encourage you to schedule an exam at the Brady M. Palmer OD clinic immediately if you experience any of the symptoms listed below.
- Blurry, cloudy, film-like, or foggy vision
- Double vision
- Glare that causes you to see streaks or halos around lights
- Light sensitivity, especially with the sun’s rays, headlights on cars, or bright lamps
- Notable change in how you perceive color
- Problems with night vision
Remember that these symptoms are not normal. While you may not have cataracts in Tullahoma, TN, scheduling an exam as soon as possible is critical to confirm or rule out cataracts or another diagnosis.
